With hun- dreds of miles of waterway, they offer every type of lake-lover’s recreational activity. There’s power boat- ing, water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, swim- ming, diving, sunbathing and fishing . . . and there’s time enough – and lake enough – to fit it all in. Nearby Golf and Tennis
Some of the best golf in the world is right in our backyard. Designers like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Tom Kite, Robert Trent Jones, and Bechtol Russell have all used the natural resources in our area to construct magnificent tracts that challenge scratch golfers, yet remain playable for casual duffers. The courses in the Highland Lakes area feature wet creeks, massive granite outcroppings, lakeside lies, plenty of trees, and stunning vistas.

Wineries
Whether it’s the wild grapes that naturally thrive in the area or the influence of European immigrants who planted cuttings from their homeland, today’s vintners take advantage of the ideal climate for producing award-winning wines. Area wine connoisseurs can visit several different and unique vineyards: Spicewood Vineyards, Fall Creek Vineyards, Stone House Vineyard, Flat Creek Estate, and Lost Creek Vineyard. Some of the local vineyards have been established for decades, while others were only conceived a few years ago. Not surprisingly, however, all our local wineries have received awards and praise in local, national and international competitions, as well as well-known magazines and publications. Combine that with the genuine Texas hospitality you will receive, the beautiful Hill Country setting, and a genuine passion for producing and sharing truly great wines, and it’s easy to see why many people plan their vacations around wine-tasting tours in the area.
Scenic Drives
Many country and farm-to-market roads wind gently through the Texas Hill Country. If you don’t mind slowing down and getting lost for a little while, you might see some scenery that makes a vacation worth taking. Us locals take off to other parts of the country now and again too, but then we come back and realize just exactly why we moved here. The rivers and creeks . . . the lakes and hills . . . the windmills and wildlife. Now, throw in a few favorites like wildflowers in the spring, and leaves changing in the fall, and you just can’t have a better day out. Come to the Visitor Bureau on Highway 281, where we have over two dozen area maps to help you get lost.
Sportsman’s Country
Hunting, fishing, and camping activities are popular here. Native game fish abound in lakes and streams, including bass, crappie, bream and catfish. Call the Visitor Bureau for information on local fishing guides. Fall and winter hunting seasons offer plentiful white-tailed deer, feral hogs, wild turkey, and excellent wing shooting of migratory and native game birds.
Hiking, Biking and Rock Climbing
Nearby Enchanted Rock State Park lets you climb to the top of the second-largest granite dome (batholith) in the United States, while a short drive to Longhorn Cavern lets you descend to the cool depths of limestone caves cut by prehistoric rivers. With native son Lance Armstrong calling the Hill Country home, bicycling through the Highland Lakes is a popular pastime and there are plenty of beautiful and challenging back roads to choose from.
Horseback Riding
This is Texas after all, y’all! Whether you have your own horse or you want to ride the range on a rental, there’s nothing quite like seeing the Hill Country cowboy-style. Many of the LCRA and state parks have riding trails. There are riding clubs and local ranches--such as Colbert Ranch and Post Oak Farm--that can get any greenhorn started. Ask the Visitor Bureau how you can experience the Hill Country, Texas-style.
The Art of Living
Nurturing your artistic nature just seems, well, natural, living in a place like this. Numerous guilds and societies, as well as galleries, art, and even cooking schools are here to inspire you. Be sure to come see the Highland Lakes Arts and Crafts shows in which all the local galleries and artists get involved. Live theatre more your style? The Hill Country Community Theatre offers great family entertainment with live-theatre productions and encourages community involvement in all facets of production, from acting to set design and production.
