Bluebonnet Blues logo Bluebonnet Blues and Fine Arts Festival This Month!

Doesn't matter where you are, set aside these dates: March 28-30, 2008.  And get yourself a big ol cowboy hat, 'cause you're spending that last weekend in March at the Bluebonnet Blues and Fine Arts Festival, in the true blue heart of Texas.

As the website makes plain, we've got a smoking lineup just waiting to happen.  We've got good food, an actual art competition, and events scheduled for the whole family to enjoy.

Most of what we've got, though, is the blues.  It's hard to tell the headliners in a lineup this solid.  There's Johnny Nicholas and Pianorama on Friday night at the Uptown Marble Theater, a romp with four accomplished blues pianists through the blues piano landscape.  On the main stage Friday, feel the heartfelt blues of Jon Justice.  Saturday night you might want to hold onto your hat, because we've got Homemade Jamz on the main stage for a full 90 minutes.  (They blew BB King out of his chair, so it's just as well to be prepared.)  Then on Sunday, when most shows have already wound down, Grammy Winner Ruben Ramos will perform with Los Flames.  And Zac Harmon will take you deep blue and back again to end the show.

Tickets are limited, with only 5000 available for each day.  Get them at GetTix.net.  The festival site links to all lodging in the area.  We'll be back at you later on with updates and news.  (Stay tuned in particular for info about our educational workshop at Uptown Marble Theater featuring Dr. Barry Lee Pearson-you won't find another like it in all the Lone Star State.)

Virginia Vaughn Paint the Town

In conjunction with the Bluebonnet Blues and Fine Arts Festival, Marble Falls Historic Main Street Association will hold its third annual Paint the Town plein air painting event in the historic downtown area of Marble Falls March 28-30.

Terri Wells - 2006 "Paint the Town" Winner

Juried artists will set up their easels in a location of their choice in the downtown area.  Collectors are invited to attend and watch the artists at work.

This year's event will cover three days. Three winners will be awarded $1500 in prize money and medals designed by sculptor, Dan Pogue. An artists' reception with wine and hors d'oervres will be held Saturday evening when the awards will be presented.

A silent auction for event-produced paintings will begin Saturday evening and continue on Sunday until 3:00pm.

For more information, contact Skylar Saenz at skylar@servicetitlecompany.net or Janey Rives at janey@jspacegallery.com.

Acclaimed for her captivating country landscapes, Milbie Benge's work has been called "romantic realism" as her ability to softly convey the beauty of nature evokes a true sense of place. Having studied under such notable artists as A.D. Greer and Dalhart Winberg, Benge's work reveals her interest and ease in the natural world.  From the mirrored surface of a river at sunrise, to leafy country lanes and fields sparkling with wildflowers, Benge's paintings capture a single serene moment in time, evoking the peaceful pace of the outdoors.

Her wide and accurate knowledge of the rural countryside, especially in Texas, Colorado, Arizona and her native California, gives her an unusual sweep of view.  Most noted for her signature "halos of light," Benge's talent for depicting the effects of sunlight and moonlight speak of a subtle sense of mystery. Her atmospheres are often laden with mist, giving a sense of the refreshing quality of early spring, that seasonal touch that is always present in her landscapes.

The daughter of a Baptist minister, Benge became fascinated with drawing at a young age. Her father and several high school art teachers eagerly encouraged her artistic development. Born in a migratory camp hospital near Sacramento, California, Benge became very familiar with rural scenes as she traveled often from town to town in California and Texas because of her father's missionary work. As a young adult, her passion for the rural landscape continued to grow. She traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and the Far East, studying and painting country landscapes, from English cottages and rose gardens to weathered Kentucky barns and ancient fence posts.

Her work has gained a wide following of collectors in the U.S. and Europe, including Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Burt Reynolds, Tom Landry, Byron Nelson and the estate of the late Barbara Stanwyck. Resident of Austin, Texas since 1968, Benge has taught numerous painting workshops in Texas. Summer months Benge is in residence at her studio in Raton, New Mexico. Milbie has generously supported charitable causes by donating her work to fundraising auctions, including Habitat for Humanity, The Austin Symphony League, The March of Dimes, Ballet Austin and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
